Questions about Fr. Mark's Photo

Some people have noticed that Fr. Mark's photo is no longer hanging in the Narthex.  When he hung that photo, Fr. Mark's intention was to show the current pastor.  At that time, he did not know that he was being transferred or that the Narthex would be dedicated to him.  When he learned about the Narthex, he accepted the dedication with the request that his photo not remain after he was gone.  He wanted to have the current pastor represented on the wall.  He has visited several times, and has asked that his photo be removed.  We are having a photo of Fr. Thom framed to be placed on the wall, to represent the current pastor, as was the original intention.  With respect to Fr. Mark's wishes, his photo has been removed.

And it happened that, while [Jesus] was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. - Lk 24:30-31

From the Pastor's Desk

Pastor's Notes

These past weeks as our weather has changed from Winter to Spring, I have been watching the birds.  First I noticed how many birds were out and about again.  I also started hearing their songs (earlier and earlier in the day!) and I was reminded of all the activities that birds undertake in the Spring.  Birds from tiny finches to grand turkeys all set out to find a place to nest.  They behave as if they haven't just spent four months struggling minute by minute to stay alive.  They search for just the right spot to lay their eggs, hatch their chicks, and raise their young.  I have been so inspired thinking about all of this and thinking that what good mothers they are.  Of course, most scientists will say that they aren't thinking about any of this; that they are just acting on instinct.

We, of course, have our own instincts that urge us toward some of these same activities. We don't build literal nests, but we all recognize the phrase "empty nester" as one whose children have "flown the coop".  Anyway, we all have some instinct to care for our young.  However, we are much more complex creatures than birds.  We do a lot of thinking about what happens in our lives, and we make decisions based on those thoughts.  Our mothers do not just follow their instincts.  They react to what has happened in their lives.  They copy what they have seen, and at the same time learn, and create new behaviors.  This I think is even more amazing than what the birds do.

On this Mother's Day weekend I think it is important for us to reflect about the lives of our own mothers.  They have been through harsh Winters of their own and survived.  They have decided to bring us into the world.  They have cared for us, or given us into the care of others who they hoped would be able to care for us.  They have passed on to us wonderful strengths, and have tried to shield us from the harshness they have known.  Not every one of our mothers has done this perfectly, but most of them have done this as best they could.  And, I should say, those who are mothers of small children now, we need to honor your efforts as well. It has probably never been easy to be a mother, and it may never be. Mothers who have embraced this challenge are truly an inspiration for us all.  So, this weekend we say "thanks' to all who have mothered us, and we ask for God to bless them with the strength they need to continue on.

God Bless!

Confirmation Mass

Sunday, June 12 at 2:30 p.m.

with Bishop Christian

If you brought food into the classrooms at St. Mary or St. Theresa during the school year, please remove the food as soon as possible.  We have had a problem with animals getting into the building because they are attracted to the leftover food.

Thank You.

Perfumes and Scents

We have had requests that we ask people to limit the scents they wear in church.  Some people are sensitive to perfumes and other scents to the point that they can become ill if sitting in close proximity to someone wearing perfume or another scented product. Especially at St. Mary, where space is limited, it can be difficult for some people to stay through Mass if they are bothered by perfumes or other scents.  Thank you for your consideration for others.

Baby Shower

In the entrance of the church, you will see a collection basket for baby gifts.  There are several families in need in Hillsboro and we are collecting baby gifts and necessities for these families.  Last year we had a wonderful collection that was divided between three local mothers.  This year we would like to help more local families in need.  Watch the bulletin for information about the upcoming baby shower!

Hillsboro Food Pantry

The Hillsboro Food Pantry is always in need of donations of a variety of foods. The greatest need at this time is protein foods.  This group includes peanut or other nut butters, beans, nuts, canned meats, boxed meals or other prepared meals.

The food pantry is always in need of non-perishable foods of every kind.  If you have any non-perishable food items or paper products that you'd like to donate, please bring them to the church.

Feed a Teen

Every Friday a local church is being asked to donate 20- 25 bags of groceries to the teen center in Hillsboro to provide meals for teens that visit the center during the week.  St. Mary makes the bags once a month.  We will post a list of needed foods for anyone who would like to donate food or money.  If you would like to participate, please contact the parish office or Celia at 290-0499 or 478-1635.
